Message from SBCs Chairman

To our members,

Cecilia Carlswärd, Chairman, Swedish Business Council

The current geopolitical situation in the Middle East is not abstract — it is already shaping how we operate, decide, and lead.

Rising tensions involving the United States, Israel and Iran are translating into tangible effects across the Gulf. Here in the UAE, many are navigating a dual reality: staying focused on work and daily life, while following developments that feel both uncertain and, for many, deeply personal.

It is a demanding position to be in — and one that deserves to be acknowledged.

From a business perspective, the impact is immediate.
The closure of the Strait of Hormuz is a defining example. One of the world’s most critical shipping routes has effectively been taken out of operation, with immediate consequences for oil flows, global trade, and energy pricing. The effects are not regional — they are global, influencing supply chains, cost structures, and economic outlooks far beyond the Gulf.

For companies operating across markets, this is translating into real pressure. Supply chains are being disrupted, logistics setups are being reconfigured in real time, and coordination across regions has become significantly more complex. What was previously contingency planning is now core to daily operations.

In this environment, leadership is being tested in a very real way.
Many leaders are moving from structured planning into continuous decision-making — often with incomplete information and little time. The ability to stay clear, calm, and decisive under these conditions is not trivial, and it is worth recognising the level of leadership being exercised across organisations right now.

At the same time, it is important to recognise the resilience that defines this region. The UAE and the wider Gulf have built strong systems, infrastructure and governance precisely to manage volatility — and that foundation matters in moments like this.

For the Swedish Business Council community, this moment calls for both awareness and perspective — recognising the operational and human challenges many are navigating, while staying connected, informed, and supportive of one another.

Business communities play an essential role in periods like this — not only as networks for opportunity, but as platforms for exchange, reassurance, and shared understanding.

Looking ahead, the situation remains fluid. As of this morning, we are receiving indications of a two-week ceasefire — a welcome development. At the same time, uncertainty remains, and the situation will require close attention in the days and weeks ahead. It is already clear that adaptability, strong local presence, and trusted relationships will be key — not as advantages, but as necessities.

Above all, this is a moment to balance focus with empathy — to continue delivering in our professional roles, while recognising the broader context that affects us all.
